Suno's Style Field and Style Influence Slider, Explained Properly

Suno’s Custom Mode gives you a Style of Music field and, below the lyrics, a Style Influence slider – and most frustrating generations trace back to treating them as one control. They are two halves of a sentence: the field supplies the vocabulary (genre, tempo, instruments, vocal, production, mood), and the slider supplies the grammar – how strictly the model must obey that vocabulary. A precise field at Strong influence produces exactly what you described; the same field at Loose invites interpretation. Get the division of labor right and Suno becomes consistent; get it wrong and every generation is a re-roll.

What the Style Field Actually Does

The Style of Music field is one of Custom Mode’s three inputs (style, lyrics, and the toggles/advanced options around them), and its job is to define the musical character of the generation: genre, mood, tempo, instrumentation, vocal quality, production texture. It reads natural language, not keywords – but it rewards structured natural language.

The formula that produces consistent output:

Each descriptor constrains one dimension of the output. That mechanical framing explains everything else about the field’s behavior.

The 4-7 Descriptor Rule, Demonstrated

Two descriptorsrock, energetic – and Suno fills every unspecified dimension with its most popular default: generic pop-rock, standard drums, radio-friendly male vocal. Run it ten times and no two results sound related, because nothing constrained them to.

Six descriptorsGarage rock, raw and aggressive, distorted bass, room mic drums, shouted male vocals, lo-fi production – and ten generations share a recognizable sonic identity. The differences land where you want them: melody and arrangement, not fundamental character.

Ten-plus descriptors – add 145 BPM, minor key, reverb-heavy, vintage tube amp warmth, 1960s Detroit influence to the six – and the output goes muddy. Suno cannot honor every constraint simultaneously, so it partially satisfies all of them: the era fights the tempo, the reverb fights the lo-fi, and the result sounds confused rather than specific.2

Under-specification produces inconsistency; over-specification produces compromise. Four to seven is where constraint and coherence meet.

What Silently Fails in the Style Field

Four habits that waste credits because nothing errors – the input is just ignored or unreliable:

The Style Influence Slider: Grammar for Your Vocabulary

Style Influence is one of three Creative Sliders that appear in Custom Mode below the Lyrics field (alongside Weirdness and Audio Influence).1 It runs from Loose to Strong:

The composition rule that makes both controls make sense: match the slider to the precision of your field.

  • Precise field + Strong influence = production mode. You wrote six exact descriptors; make them binding. This is the setting for consistent output across a project.
  • Sketch field + Loose influence = exploration mode. Two or three descriptors, liberty granted – you are asking Suno to surprise you, and it will.
  • Precise field + Loose influence = wasted precision. You did the specification work and then told the model to ignore it.
  • Vague field + Strong influence = strictly enforced genericness. The model obeys hard – but “rock, energetic” strictly obeyed is still generic rock.

Weirdness composes on a different axis: it controls how probable the model’s musical choices are, independent of how strictly it follows your style. A precise field at Strong influence with high Weirdness gives you your exact garage-rock spec executed with unconventional structure – the sliders are orthogonal, and treating them that way is the whole trick.1

A Working Default

For repeatable results, the configuration I keep returning to:

  1. Style field: the six-slot formula, filled deliberately – genre+subgenre, tempo, one or two instruments, vocal character, production texture, mood.
  2. Style Influence: Strong – if a descriptor is in the field, it earned its place.
  3. Weirdness: center, raised only when results feel generic within the spec.
  4. Anything unwanted goes in Exclude, never as a negative in the Style field.
  5. Iterate by changing one descriptor at a time – with Strong influence, single-descriptor changes produce interpretable differences instead of re-rolls.
